(This is Part 6 of the Coach in Your Head series. Read Part 5 here.)
You can bring more liberation to your life for $2.75.
Remember, you want the coach in your head to liberate you–to bring you both high support and high challenge. Many times we slip into self-domination, which means that we bring ourselves low support but high challenge. We defeat ourselves habitually.
To continue with the theme, consider giving yourself Eight Minute Victories. Last summer, during some of my drive time, I listened to one of those “get yourself more organized” books on CD. It was called The Eight Minute Organizer, by Regina Leeds. Look it up if you want. Hundreds of good organizational ideas. A little overwhelming now and again, and for my purposes I could have entitled it “Here’s a bunch of stuff you’ll never do.” But I actually did pick up some good stuff, there was one thing in particular that was helpful, so I pass it on to you.
Go out and buy a mechanical kitchen timer. You know…the one that goes tick-tick-tick, and it abruptly dings and rattles at the end of the cycle. Your mom had a white one. The idea goes like this. We all have things we need to do that we sometimes avoid. Let’s say we need to de-clutter. There’s too much to do, so we don’t do anything. Maybe the closet needs to be culled. Or maybe the taxes need to get organized. Or we need to pray, or read a devotional. We sometimes don’t start because it’s too overwhelming.
What Can You Accomplish in Eight Minutes?
But Regina contends that we can stand to do anything for about eight minutes. (Even work on a blog.) So get started with a mechanical kitchen timer. Don’t settle for your smart phone’s groovy-cool-hipster timer. Get the mechanical one and enjoy its tick-tick-tick daring presence. I went out and bought one for $2.75, and it works great. It’s on my desk as a reminder that I can get some things checked off my list in short order. Many times I’ll work harder on the task at hand, but it was the timer that got me started.
There you have it. Try it. The coach in your head will liberate you with support and challenge as you accumulate Eight Minute Victories. You will break through some barriers, and some things you were avoiding will get done.
