A few weeks ago I spoke at an international English-language church in San Jose, Costa Rica– the emphasis being on “international”. With about 400 people in attendance, the pastor told me that on any given Sunday they had about 35 different language groups present. Even though the services are in English, many are using English as their second language. At the Friday night home Bible study I think there were twelve people, from seven different countries. I thought of Peter’s first epistle, when he spoke to God’s elect…strangers who were scattered about (I Peter 1:1). Many people, doing life in a land that is foreign to them. It can be lonely and unsettling.
