In the 4th Century, leaders of the church decided they needed a “birthday” for Jesus–an annual way to celebrate the incarnation of God coming as man. So, they looked around and came up with December 25. Why? Because there was a pagan holiday in play at the time which honored the Sun God. It was called “Sol Invictus”…”the unconquerable sun”. Church leaders said, “Let’s take that one! Out with the old, in with the new!” Who would have thought December 25 would become so notorious.
We don’t know what day is really Jesus’ birthday, but we do know that he came to earth as man to bring hope–to make things new for those who would believe and follow. That’s something to celebrate. Merry Christmas! Out with the old, in with the new.
